The Lake District is lucky to be home to four fantastic restaurants boasting one or more Michelin stars. These restaurants show us exactly how fantastic fine dining can be and if you are visiting the area, celebrating a special occasion or are simply a bit of a foodie, you will want to try and book at one of these exclusive restaurants.

L’Enclume is in Cartmel and is one of Simon Rogan’s many establishments. He has been described as the Heston Blumenthal of the North and his imaginative and quirkily creative take on modern British cuisine means L’Enclume has picked up a Michelin Star. Experimental ingredients and presentation make it a real treat when you visit and of course, you need to book quite far in advance. Many of the flavour combinations are created through the use of locally foraged and farmed ingredients. The restaurant itself has a very open and minimalist style which is not to everyone’s taste but it allows the food to be the centrepiece of every table.

Forest Side

Forest Side is one of the newest Michelin-starred restaurants in the Lake District and it calls a beautiful gothic mansion in Grasmere its home. The landscape is a perfect companion to the original and flavourful food on offer from Chef Kevin Tickle. Tickle is Cumbrian through and through and his commitment to local produce, foraging and suppliers is in his blood, rather than being a response to the latest trend. The restaurant has one Michelin Star and it has a modern British focus, although many of the foods have a creative and modern Scandinavian feel. The restaurant’s strapline is ‘inspired by the Cumbrian landscape’ and when you taste some of the beautiful flavours in perfect surroundings, you will surely agree with it.

Gilpin Hotel and Lake House

Intimate, quaint and entirely original, the Gilpin Hotel and Lake House combines a series of individually designed dining rooms which give you the option of choosing the space which suits your preferences. The Gilpin Hotel and Lake House is in Bowness and as a hotel there is the option of staying overnight if you want to experience everything the site has to offer. All meals have modern flair and creativity with fresh, precise preparation and presentation which is bold, stylish and perfectly fitting for the surroundings. You will find some unusual spice and flavour combinations too.

The Samling

The Samling is warm and welcoming Ambleside restaurant and hotel offering smart and flavourful fine dining cuisine. Looking out over 66 beautiful acres of grounds which lead down to Lake Windermere on the horizon, it is a beautiful setting for a special meal. The Samling menu comes to life thanks to the extravagant and impressive presentation and they invest heavily in original and exquisite ingredients for a unique experience for every diner. Their kitchen garden provides many ingredients for the menu and the restaurant is also part of an innovative international seed exchange project, which allows for even more unique flavours and interesting combinations. This restaurant is especially attractive if you stay at our lake Windermere cottages.

The Michelin-starred restaurants are not the only fantastic fine dining options available to you but if you’re a food enthusiast, they really are worth looking into. It’s one way of making your holiday even more memorable and ensuring you taste some flavours unique to the location and your restaurant of choice.
